EDE Center Class Descriptions
Mom & Tot:
This class includes the same elements as our Creative Movement class and is done with child and parent together. It is meant for children under 3 years of age who can walk on their own.
Creative Movement
This class begins to explore the basic elements of dance, which include shape, level, speed and direction. The class also includes basic locomotion skills such as jumping, leaping, skipping, hopping and galloping. The students learn to interact with each other and are encouraged to use their imaginations throughout the entire class. An example of an exercise done in a creative movement class would be the "Freeze Dance" where the music plays and when it stops the dancers freeze in a creative shape.
Pre-Ballet:
This class is a combination of creative movement and beginning ballet. At this level, students continue developing their locomotion skills and begin learning ballet terminology. Basic positions and arm movements are introduced in this class, while still including elements from creative movement (see above.)
Ballet:
Ballet is a classical form of dance with emphasis on clean lines and positions. It trains dancers to have grace, precision and strength along with proper alignment. Ballet is strongly recommended for all that are interested in dance because it teaches the fundamentals of all dance forms.
Jazz:
Jazz dance is a stylistic technique taught in a variety of ways. This class focuses on intricate rhythms and body isolations. Other components of a jazz class may include various leaps and turns as well as upbeat combinations of movement.
Hip-Hop:
This style of dance is jazz based. It deals less with technique and more with performance and choreography. Hip-hop would be most closely related to what you would see in a music video.
Modern:
Modern dance technique is an organic method of moving placing emphasis on the articulation of the torso and spine. Modern dance trains the dancer to be more expressive and to relate to a variety of music styles. Students also learn proper body alignment. Several styles of modern dance exist today including Limon, Graham, Cunningham and Horton.
Tap:
This class focuses on a variety of rhythms and sounds, and involves mastering intricate footwork. Two main styles of tap include Rhythm and Broadway.
Ballroom:
This class will teach smooth, rhythmic and Latin dances. Some examples may include the Foxtrot, Waltz and Tango. This class is run through Rochester Community Enrichment and a partner is required.
